El Gran Hotel de Arrecife se terminó de construir en 1974. Con 54 metros, es el edificio más alto de Lanzarote. En noviembre de 1994, el hotel se incendió por completo. Como estaba vacío, no hubo víctimas mortales. Los bomberos no pudieron extinguir el incendio. Lo trágico fue que el bien equipado cuerpo de bomberos del aeropuerto no pudo ayudar, ya que se trata de un aeropuerto internacional y no puede estar ni un segundo sin un cuerpo de bomberos. Las ruinas del hotel permanecieron durante los siguientes 20 años detrás de una valla de obra hasta que en 2004 pudo volver a abrir sus puertas como hotel de 5 estrellas.

Das Gran Hotel in Arrecife wurde im Jahr 1974 fertiggestellt. Mit 54 Metern ist es das höchste Gebäude auf Lanzarote. Im November 1994 brannte das Hotel vollständig aus. Da es leer stand gab es keine Todesopfer. Die Feuerwehr war nicht in der Lage den Brand zu löschen. Tragisch war der Umstand, dass die gut ausgestattete Feuerwehr des Flughafens nicht helfen durfte, da es sich um einen internationalen Flughafen handelt und der nicht eine Sekunde ohne eine Wehr sein darf. Die Hotelruine stand die nächsten 20 Jahre hinter einem Bauzaun bis es 2004 wieder seine Türen als 5 Sterne Hotel öffnen konnte.
